Substance abuse is characterized by overindulgence or inappropriate use of any substance for purposes other than those for which they are indicated, or in amounts and quantities other than directed. Substance abuse is often called drug abuse when in the context of illicit drugs or medications; the terms are interchangeable from a medical standpoint. Substance abuse can involve 1) legal substances, such as prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications, inhalants, and alcohol, or 2) illegal substances, such as amphetamines, cocaine, crack, marijuana, or heroin. Substance abuse can threaten the quality of life, health, and safety of the substance abuser or others. Substance abuse occurs in all socioeconomic groups and age groups. When substance abuse is associated with disruptive behavior or activity associated with obtaining and using a drug that a person is dependent on, it is considered an addiction.
Dependence on a drug or substance refers to a chronic, compulsive need to continue taking a mind-altering substance to induce feelings of pleasure or to relieve anxiety or tension, despite negative consequences. Biological and physiological factors can cause dependence. Tolerance from dependence leads to use of larger amounts of a substance/drug in order to achieve the same results; withdrawal from regular use can cause tremors, headaches, diarrhea, and other symptoms.
Addiction is the disruptive behavior or activity associated with dependence and typically interferes with one's ability to work, study, or interact normally with family and friends.
