alopecia (al″o-pe´shә) loss of hair. The cause of the simple condition is not yet fully understood, although it is known that the tendency is limited primarily to males, runs in certain families, and is more common in some racial groups than in others. It is often associated with aging, but can occur in younger persons. Called also baldness.
