alveolus (al-veŽә-lәs) pl. alveŽoli  Latin word meaning a little hollow, such as the socket of a tooth, a follicle of an acinous gland, or a pulmonary alveolus. adj., alveŽolar., adj.
 

dental alveolus  the cavities or sockets of either jaw, in which the roots of the teeth are embedded.
  one of the cavities or sockets in the alveolar process of the mandible or maxilla, in which the roots of the teeth are held by fibers of the periodontal ligament.

pulmonary alveoli  small outpouchings along the walls of the alveolar sacs and alveolar ducts; through them, gas exchange takes place between alveolar gas and pulmonary capillary blood.
