citric acid (sitīrik)   a compound found in citrus fruits and acting as an antiscorbutic and diuretic. It functions as an anticoagulant in blood preservatives such as citrate phosphate dextrose, and is a metabolic intermediate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle.
