zidovudine (zi-do´vu-dēn) a nucleoside analogue to thymidine, used as an antiretroviral agent in treatment of patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS); administered orally or intravenously. It was the first agent approved for such use.
