papaverine (pә-pavīәr-in)   an alkaloid obtained from opium or prepared synthetically; the hydrochloride salt has been used as a smooth muscle relaxant and vasodilator to relieve arterial spasms causing cerebral, peripheral, or myocardial ischemia and is also injected into the penis in the diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction.
