chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) any pulmonary disorder occurring as a result of increased airway resistance or of decreased elastic recoil; the diseases most often associated are asthma, chronic bronchitis, and pulmonary emphysema. Symptoms include shortness of breath upon exertion and a cough that becomes more severe as the condition progresses. Called also chronic airflow limitation and chronic obstructive airway or lung disease.
