Providencia (prov″ĭ-denīshә) a genus of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacteria, occurring in normal urine and feces. Organisms are potential pathogens associated with urinary tract and secondary tissue infections. P. stuarītii causes nosocomial infections and is a major agent in burn infections.
