surrogate (surĀ“o-gәt) a substitute; a thing or person that takes the place of something or someone else, such as a drug used in place of another. surrogate mother. in psychoanalysis, the projection onto another person of one's mother or father image and unconscious and inappropriate response to that person with the feelings and attitudes felt for the real mother or father.
