Treponema (trep″o-neŽmә)   a genus of gram-negative, motile bacteria, spirochetes found in the oral, intestinal, and genital mucosa. Pathogenic species include Treponema caraŽteum, the etiologic agent of pinta; Treponema palŽlidum subsp. palŽlidum, the etiologic agent of syphilis; and Treponema palŽlidum subsp. perteŽnue, the etiologic agent of yaws.
