Trypanosoma
(tri-pan″o-soīmә)
a genus of protozoa parasitic in the blood and lymph of invertebrates and vertebrates, including humans; most species live
part of their life cycle in the intestines of insects or other invertebrates, but the typical adult stage is found only in
the vertebrate host. T. gambienīse and T. rhodesienīse cause the West African and East African forms of African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in humans, and T. cruīzi causes Chagas disease. Other species cause diseases in domestic animals.
