keratinocyte (kә-ratīĭ-no-sīt) the cell of the epidermis that synthesizes keratin; about 95 per cent of the epidermal cells are of this type. The other primary type of epidermal cell is the melanocyte. In successive stages in the various layers of the skin, keratinocytes are known as basal cells, prickle cells, and granular cells.
