kinin (ki´nin)   the generic term for any of the polypeptides related in amino acid sequence and physiological activity to bradykinin and kallidin, formed by cleavage of kininogens. Kinins are plasma proteins that increase the permeability of blood vessels, and are active in inflammation by interacting with prostaglandins to cause pain, cause smooth muscle contraction, and increase the migration of white blood cells to the area of inflammation; they are also potent kidney vasodilators, which increases the excretion of sodium.
