cutaneous lupus erythematosus  one of the two main types of lupus erythematosus; it may involve only the skin or may precede involvement of other body systems. A common classification divides it into three groups: the chronic types (including discoid lupus and lupus erythematosus profundus); the subacute types (such as neonatal lupus); and an acute type with a red, edematous eruption, a facial rash called a butterfly rash, or an extensive eruption resembling measles, often with systemic exacerbations. The latter type is sometimes the presenting symptom of systemic lupus erythematosus, such as after sun exposure.
