hallucinogen
(hә-loo´sĭ-no-jen″)
a chemical agent capable of producing hallucinations, such as LSD, mescaline, or psilocybin. Certain mushrooms, seeds, and cactus parts are also hallucinogens. The experiences brought about by the use of hallucinogens
involve a more acute “awareness” of one's environment and a distorted response to visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli; some
persons who take these substances exhibit behavior resembling psychosis. adj., hallucinogen´ic., adj.
