hemangioma (he-man″je-o´mә) a common type of congenital vascular malformation or benign tumor made up of newly formed blood vessels clustered together; it may be present at birth or appear a little later. The most common type appears as a network of small blood-filled capillaries near the surface of the skin, forming a red to purple birthmark. Other types are sometimes found in the liver and in bones.
