hemiplegia
(hem″e-ple´jә)
paralysis of one side of the body; usually caused by a brain lesion, such as a tumor, or by stroke syndrome. The paralysis occurs on the side opposite the brain disorder, because motor axons from the cerebral cortex travel in two
bands called the pyramidal tracts, and most of the fibers cross to the opposite side in the medulla oblongata. adj., hemiple´gic., adj.
