hepatitis E a type of viral hepatitis caused by exposure to hepatitis E virus, transmitted by ingestion of something contaminated with feces, usually water. There is not a chronic form, but acute infection may be fatal in pregnant women. Called also enterically transmitted non-A, non-B h.
