esophageal hiatus  , hiatus esophageus  the opening in the diaphragm for the passage of the esophagus and the vagus nerves.

pleuroperitoneal hiatus  a posterolateral opening in the fetal diaphragm; if it fails to close there is a defect in the diaphragm that may become a site the type of congenital hernia called a Bochdalek hernia. Called also foramen of Bochdalek;
