posterior pituitary hormones  the hormones released from the neurohypophysis (posterior pituitary); they are formed in the neuronal cells of the hypothalamic nuclei and stored in nerve cell endings in the neurohypophysis. The principal ones are vasopressin and oxytocin. These hormones are synthesized in the cell bodies of neurons located in the hypothalamus and transported along the axons to the terminals in the neurohypophysis, where they are released in response to neural stimulation. Called also neurohypophysial hormones.
