hypoparathyroidism
(hi″po-par″ә-thi´roid-iz-әm)
the condition produced by greatly reduced function of the parathyroid glands or by their removal in treatment of hyperparathyroidism. The lack of parathyroid hormone leads to a fall in serum calcium level, which may result in increased excitability of nerves and muscles and, ultimately, in tetany. The plasma phosphate level goes up, and this results in decreased bone resorption and increased bone density. There also may be skin, eye (cataracts), mental, and dental symptoms.
