iris (i´ris) pl. i´rides the circular colored membrane behind the cornea, perforated by the pupil. It is made up of a flat bar of circular muscular fibers that surround the pupil, a thin layer of plain muscle fibers that dilate the pupil, and, on the side toward the interior of the eye, two layers of pigmented cells.
