attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder  a childhood mental disorder characterized by inattention behaviors such as distractibility, forgetfulness, not finishing tasks, and not appearing to listen; hyperactivity; and impulsive behaviors such as fidgeting or squirming, difficulty remaining seated, excessive running or climbing, feelings of restlessness, difficulty waiting one's turn, interrupting others, and excessive talking. Onset is normally before age seven. Patterns of behavior vary in individual children and even in the same child from day to day. The activity level improves during adolescence but attention problems often continue into later years.
