autonomic nervous system
the parts of the peripheral nervous system that work without conscious control, as opposed to the somatic nervous system. This part of the nervous system governs the glands, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscles such as those of the digestive system,
respiratory system, and skin. There are has two subsystems, called the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system.
