assisted coughing
a technique used to enhance the effectiveness of coughing for individuals such as quadriplegics who have ineffective diaphragmatic
movement. The hands of the person assisting are placed on either side of the rib cage or on the upper abdomen under the diaphragm;
the patient is instructed to exhale as the assistant pushes upward and inward.
