dissociative disorders
(dĭ-so´se-ә-tiv)
a group of mental disorders characterized by a sudden, temporary change in consciousness or behavior, which may become bizarre. The defense mechanism of dissociation underlies these disorders and any organic basis for the changes must be ruled out. The category includes: dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue, dissociative identity disorder, and depersonalization disorder.
