drug dependence
a state in which there is a compulsion to take a drug, either continuously or periodically, in order to experience its psychic
effects or to avoid the discomfort of its absence. It is often subdivided into psychological dependence and physiological dependence, although many authorities use the term to refer only to states of physiological needs for the drug.
