nerve fiber a slender process of a neuron, especially the prolonged axon that conducts nerve impulses away from the cell; classified as either afferent (conducting motor impulses to muscles) or efferent fibers (conducting sensory impulses from receptors in the periphery inwards toward the brain). Fibers are also distinguished as either myelinated or unmyelinated according to whether they have or do not have a myelin sheath.
