optic nerve the second cranial nerve, which is purely sensory and is concerned with carrying impulses for the sense of sight; see also vision. The rods and cones of the retina are connected with this nerve. The point at which it leaves the eye is the optic disk or “blind spot,” so called because there are no rods or cones there.
