osteogenesis imperfecta
an inherited condition marked by abnormally brittle bones that are subject to fracture. The most common kind is osteogenesis imperfecta tarda, in which the fractures occur when the child begins to walk; it is usually attended by blue coloration of the sclera (Lobstein disease) and sometimes by otosclerotic deafness (Van der Hoeve syndrome). A less common, usually lethal type is osteogenesis imperfecta congenita, in which deformities occur in utero and the child is born with them.
