parotitis (par″o-ti´tis)   inflammation of the parotid gland.
 

bacterial parotitis  infectious parotitis caused by a bacterial infection, most commonly with Staphylococcus aureus and less often with Escherichia coli or species of Pseudomonas.

epidemic parotitis  , infectious parotitis  mumps.
  parotitis caused by an infectious agent; see bacterial parotitis and viral parotitis.

suppurative parotitis  bacterial parotitis with suppuration, marked by rapid onset, swelling of the glands, severe pain, and often trismus, low-grade fever, headache, malaise, and leukocytosis. It occurs most often after surgery, in neonates, or in debilitated patients, usually middle-aged or older; patients usually have dehydration and suppression of salivary secretion, and sometimes have been breathing through the mouth or vomiting.

viral parotitis  infectious parotitis caused by a virus; the most common condition is mumps, and less common illnesses are caused by influenza viruses or parainfluenza viruses.
