trench fever a louse-borne rickettsial disease due to Bartonella quintana, transmitted by the human body louse, Pediculus humanus; symptoms include febrile paroxysms, leg pains, chills, sweating, rash, and enlargement of the spleen. After it clears up once, there may be relapses. Called also His or His-Werner disease.
