neonatal herpesneonatal herpes simplex
herpes simplex in a newborn baby, usually contracted while passing through the birth canal of a mother with maternal herpes. Many such babies die, and others have localized skin eruptions or damage to the liver, adrenal glands, and lungs. In a minority
of cases, virus from the mother crosses the placenta and the fetus may have brain involvement such as microcephaly or seizures.
