nucleic acid amplification increase in the number of copies of a specific nucleic acid sequence, either DNA or RNA; usually used to denote any of various in vitro techniques employed to aid detection of a nucleic acid sequence of interest. The original, and still most commonly used, technique is the polymerase chain reaction.
