cathelicidin (kә-the″lĭ-siŽdin) an antimicrobial protein that occurs in white blood cells and the epithelium. It is important in preventing infections. When too much cathelicidin and too much of an enzyme known as stratum corneum tryptic enzyme are present in the skin, an abnormal protein fragment is formed that causes the symptoms of rosacea.
