adrenalectomy (ә-dre″nәl-ek´tә-me) surgical removal of an adrenal gland, done for disorders of the gland (such as Cushing syndrome, pheochromocytoma, or adrenal adenoma or carcinoma) that cause an overproduction of adrenal hormones. In some instances of severe Cushing syndrome, total removal of both adrenal glands is necessary.
