progestational agent  any of a group of hormones that induce formation of a secretory ENDOMETRIUM and help start the luteal phase of the MENSTRUAL CYCLE. They are secreted by the CORPUS LUTEUM and PLACENTA, and in small amounts by the adrenal CORTEX. The most important of the group is PROGESTERONE. Agents having progestational activity are also produced synthetically and are most commonly used in CONTRACEPTIVES and in hormone replacement THERAPY. Called also gestagen, progestational hormone, progestin, and progestogen.
