Serum alkaline phosphatase activity is elevated in hepatobiliary disease, especially in obstructive jaundice, and in bone diseases with increased osteoblastic activity such as hyperparathyroidism, osteitis deformans, and bone cancer. The liver and bone tissue each produce a distinct isoenzyme.
