iron deficiency anemia
a type of hypochromic microcytic anemia that occurs when there are greater demands on stored iron than the person's body can meet, usually because of chronic blood loss, dietary deficiency, or defective absorption. Symptoms
include pallor, lesions around the mouth, gastrointestinal complaints, retinal hemorrhages, and thin, brittle nails. Iron
deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional disorder in the United States.
