antibody (anītĭ-bod″e) an immunoglobulin molecule having a specific amino acid sequence that gives it the ability to adhere to and interact only with the antigen that caused its synthesis. This antigen-specific property of antibodies is the basis of the antigen-antibody reaction that is a basic part of the immune response. Antibodies are synthesized by plasma cells that have been formed when antigen-specific groups (clones) of B lymphocytes respond to the presence of antigens.
