appendix (ә-pen´diks) pl. appen´dices, appendixes  a slender outgrowth or appendage.
  a small appendage near the ileocecal junction (the juncture of the small intestine and large intestine). An apparently useless structure, it can be the source of a serious illness, appendicitis. Called also vermiform appendix. adj., appendic´eal., adj.
