urinary bladder a hollow container with muscular walls in the anterior part of the pelvic cavity; often called simply the bladder. It is joined to the kidneys by the ureters and to the exterior of the body by the urethra. Urine passes into it from the kidneys every few seconds and remains there until the person urinates. This occurs when the sphincters (circular muscles) at the junction of the bladder and urethra are relaxed and the muscular walls of the bladder contract to force urine out. In the adult these sphincters can prevent urination even when the bladder is uncomfortably full, but in children such full bladder control is slow to develop.
