polypeptide
(pol″e-pepītīd)
a peptide containing two or more amino acids linked by a peptide bond; called dipeptide, tripeptide, and so on depending on the number of amino acids present.
gastric inhibitory polypeptide(GIP)
a peptide hormone synthesized by K cells in the mucous membranes of the duodenum and jejunum and released in response to glucose, fat, or amino acids in the diet;
it is a potent insulin stimulant, increases insulin secretion, and inhibits the processes of secretion and motility in the stomach.
vasoactive intestinal polypeptide(VIP)
a peptide hormone that, in addition to its vasoactive properties, stimulates intestinal secretion of water and electrolytes,
inhibits gastric secretion, promotes glycogenesis, causes hyperglycemia, and stimulates production of pancreatic juice. See
