protein C a vitamin K–dependent plasma protein that, when activated by thrombin, inhibits the coagulation cascade at the levels of factor V and factor VIII by enzymatic cleavage of the activated forms of these clotting factors; it also enhances fibrinolysis. Deficiency of protein C results in recurrent venous thrombosis. The activated form is abbreviated APC.
