an apparatus that qualifies air breathed through it, to be distinguished from a ventilator.
frequently used misnomer for ventilator (def. 2).
Drinker respirator
a formerly common type of ventilator that provided controlled, automatic breathing for a patient whose respiratory muscles were paralyzed; it consisted of a metal
tank that surrounded the patient's body with only the head outside. The popular name was iron lung.
