rhinitis (ri-ni´tis) inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose; it may be either mild and chronic or acute. Viruses, bacteria, and allergens are responsible for its varied manifestations. Often a viral rhinitis is complicated by a bacterial infection such as by streptococci, staphylococci, pneumococci, or other bacteria.
