ribosome (riĀ“bo-sōm) any of the intracellular ribonucleoproteinorganelles concerned with protein synthesis, found either bound to cell membranes or free in the cytoplasm. They may occur singly or in clusters (polyribosomes). The genetic code is translated when ribosomes attach to messenger RNA.
