RNA ribonucleic acid: a nucleic acid that is present in all living cells and controls cellular protein synthesis, playing several roles in the flow of genetic information from deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) to proteins. It is quite similar to DNA in composition, and it replaces DNA as the carrier of the genetic code in some viruses.
