rosacea (ro-za�she-ә) a chronic condition of the skin of the face, usually around the nose. It is marked by redness that is caused by enlargement of the small blood vessels of the skin. There are often papules and acnelike pustules. It occurs when there is too much of two proteins normally found in the skin, cathelicidin and stratum corneum tryptic enzyme, which causes a third, abnormal protein to be formed. Rosacea affects both men and women, but it is often more severe in men.

ocular rosacea rosacea in which the eyes are involved, becoming irritated and bloodshot.

phymatous rosacea severe rosacea affecting the lower part of the nose; there is swelling and the sebaceous glands become enlarged. The most common type is rhinophyma.
