the dreamless period of sleep, consisting of four stages of succeeding depth, during which the brain waves are slow and of
high voltage, and autonomic activities, such as heart rate and blood pressure, are low and regular. Brief episodes of REM sleep occur at intervals during this type of sleep; in adults, about 80 per cent of sleep is NREM sleep. Called also deep or slow wave sleep.
